what laptop for Music Production in 2017 ?
Mønsterhed replied to DJ Chien's topic in Technical: Equipment and Software
I can vouch for the Lenovo business models. I'm running a T460s at the moment and it's pretty good. I'd probably get a better processor than the i5-6200U that's in mine. -
Headphones recommendations
Mønsterhed replied to andorra's topic in Technical: Equipment and Software
I've heard a lot of good things about both the Sennheiser's and Beyerdynamics DT990 Pro. If you have the cash I'd probably get the Sennheiser's if I were you However, them being 1.5 times more expensive is definitely a factor also.- 25 replies

Definitely, Johnny! I'm super into the approach used by people like Taylor Deupree. My plan, though it's progressing waaaay slower than I first thought, is to make a rack centered around the Phonogene or some equivalent module. Tape recorder madness! I've got PCB's and panels to make most of the Mutable modules and rails for a DIY case. I just need time and peace of mind to actually DO all of it. I've access to all facillities including laser cutting for the case at my university, but the studies are taking up all my time and energy.... soo, maybe after the summer holidays I'll get some soldering done.

I'd choose a sample without much background noise. If it has too much I'd probably just scratch it and find another. There's loads to choose from

save on buying music from Bandcamp for europeans / buy cheaper

Cool. And just to be sure, does it matter what kind of currency you transfer to the other account? -
save on buying music from Bandcamp for europeans / buy cheaper
Mønsterhed replied to Gagarin Project's topic in Discussions
Just to open this one again... Did you use your own name for the second account? I guess you'd have to because it has to match the one on the credit card, right? I'm tired of extra taxes as well. I just want to do my music shopping in peace. -
Listening to Illuha - Akari from 12k records tonight. Beautiful stuff.

Native Instruments Maschine
Mønsterhed replied to Gagarin Project's topic in Technical: Equipment and Software
I had a Maschine for a few months but I didn't dig the workflow so I sold it again. Working in the box was more intuitive for me. Maybe because I've been doing that for so long. The only thing that could make me break out from the PC would be an Octatrack, like Neil says. -
My personal favourite is Another Fine Day - A Good Place To Be. Hands down the best record of the last many many years. Contenders for the position includes: Ott - Mir Almost anything by Ishq Same for Porya Hatami Zen Baboon - Suber Sinepearl - Cycles Within Cycles Within Anything by Ametsub Tipper - Forward Escape

Alrightm since we're playing thread necromancy, how come nobdoy's mentioned Shulman? The intricacy and sheer amount of attention to musical detail always does the trick for me.

Sure it would, Schofield! If it works, it works. What matters is the music we play and not the gear we use

Anything so long as it doesn't have a dynamic and/or transpararent-with-a-photo background.

I guess that's what happens when you insist on every attendee being a "member"

best Analog Mixer for live dubmixing ?
Mønsterhed replied to DJ Chien's topic in Technical: Equipment and Software
If Roland didn't reserve four of the inputs for their aira range it would be a good mixer, I suppose. But with half the mixer off-limits it's not really competitive. . -
controlling ableton via ipad ?
Mønsterhed replied to Gagarin Project's topic in Technical: Equipment and Software
Alright. So I just looked up touchAble. It's priced similarly to Lemur. From the description and pictures in the app store it looks really damn handy in a studio environment. If you're looking for something to take on the road and gig with though, I think I'd still go with Lemur since you can make your own interface to suit your specific needs. -
controlling ableton via ipad ?
Mønsterhed replied to Gagarin Project's topic in Technical: Equipment and Software
Haven't tried it myself but I have friends who use it in their live sets and are very happy with it. Don't really have the time to dig out demo's at the moment. I'll leave that as an exercise to the reader -
Korg Volca series (+ VST vs Hardware talks)
Mønsterhed replied to andorra's topic in Production & Music Making
If you have the chance, always try before you buy That said I've heard a lot of good things about the volca's. They are powerful if you know how to use them. -
What Audio Interface for digital DJ'ing?
Mønsterhed replied to floyd2.0's topic in Technical: Equipment and Software
NI Audio 2 all the way if all you need is two stereo outs. It's a plug and play thing. It just works, in my experience. I use it when connecting to club mixers if I don't want to bring my Z1. Prefer the analogue mixers over digital. No latency is a great thing when mixing -
controlling ableton via ipad ?

Lemur seems to be the way to go. -
I saw Yaniv DJ at S.U.N. Festival in 2013, so at least he still does that. Or used to, anyway. Not sure if he does it anymore. Shulman is also one of my favourite artists. Really hope he/they make a comeback at some point. And also Aleph Zero, naturally. They did some really sweet music and sounded different than most other labels out there.

The problem of timing is, as mentioned before in the thread, probably the most important thing addressed yet. I, too, lose interest if artists just spew out new tracks all the time (with very few exceptions, Ishq being one them). That said, I also prefer the album format over EPs, though I'm not one to shy away if the EP in question is of high quality. As a general rule I think more thought and deliberation is put into an album. It's easier to create fascinating and coherent journey over 10 tracks than over four. It's simply not enough to tell a full story. Not having written either EP or album this is of course only based on assumptions and observations

Psychill vs Psybient do you make difference ?
Mønsterhed replied to Gagarin Project's topic in Discussions
For me it's all the same. Psychedelic downtempo in various forms and guises. Sure, artists go in different directions, but if we had to give each label their own genre (as it sometimes go these days) it would be way too much hassle. I guess it comes down to what you consider psychedelic. For me it's the experimental quality to it and the emotions it awakens in me. Just because you use the tried and tested womps and squelches does not make it psychedelic to me. I usually just use umbrella terms like ambient or chillout, though. Especially if I speak with people that are not as into this kind of music as many of us on this forum are.
