YuriNondual got a reaction from Hermetech Mastering in ishq - virtual series. A little bit of freeflow thoughts
When ishq started releasing a lot of albums, that didn't sound as musical as his previous more new age work, I was a little bit upset, I was waiting for ishq music more like Orchid, Sama or And awake to trip to. But as time passed and I listened to it more I got into it a bit more, and recenlty with a release of last 2 virtual albums (Strange nebula and Moonship) I finally got it. So I wrote a little bit of thoughts to exmplain his virtual series to other people who are attached to his early ishq releases.

Matt Hillier is Cornwall based electronic music artist, he makes music for 20 years, he is best known for his new age ambient releases like Orchid or Sama but today we are not going to talk about them.

Music of Matt Hillier has many similarities with other art forms and particularly with paintings. When you first visit an art gallery, usually you like bold and familiar paintings. Maybe it’s a sunny landscape or a portrait of a beautiful person. It’s simple, it’s familiar. But as you dive deeper into a world of art and it’s history you start to appreciate finer details. Maybe this painting is unusually abstract for it’s period of time, or maybe it gives you a feeling of being home, or being alone or being content. So a painting can act as a storage, a flash drive or a time crystal of sorts, containing a whole spectrum of emotions and memories that you never had. These small details and intricacies come hand in hand with refined taste to art. But it’s not just art actually, even take a simple beverage like tea for example. First you like big and bold taste of black tea with milk and sugar perhaps? But if you keep exploring different teas and tastes and how it makes you feel you can easily discover whole universe here. Different states of mind that different types of tea can bring you to.

Now if we come back to music of Matt Hillier. As you dig deeper into his discography you are quick to discover some releases that are not musical as such, they are a sound collages or sonic paintings made of various sound forms, each form can send you to a different location. From underwater wonder to deep space exploration and beyond. Experience life from a perspective of a plant or an insect, or completely unimaginable, yet to be discovered lifeform. It is all here available to you if you allow it, with your headphones on.

A sneak peek at some of the influences behind Floating Machine's work, a slightly dark ambient DJ set, this is perfect for mellowing out to as you share a cup of tea with your friends on the veranda, or feel like going deep within yourself, allowing thoughts to flow freely through your head as you relax into a state of mindful meditation. Enjoy and thank you for listening!

Floating Machine is António Lourenço, from Coimbra – Portugal. Since very young he felt in love with music. Learned and played regularly many instruments like guitar, piano or saxophone and took part in various experimental projects in distinct areas like jazz, hip-hop or punk rock. Later, influenced by the electronic music magic, he started to DJ, exploring all its diversity, from downtempo to dance sonorities like acid jazz, nu-jazz, dub, breakbeat or deep house... Naturally, this leads to electronic music production, applying all his influences in a techno and progressive context and also leaning deeply into the palette of ambient experimental sounds. Performed in countless events and big international festivals such as Boom Festival, Freedom Festival, Zna Gathering, Shankra, among others, and you can find his music on Digital Diamonds, Techgnosis, Mindspring and his "home", Blind Arc. António is also one-half of Code Therapy, an ascending progressive techno act. A person without many words, he uses music to connect and communicate, taking the listener to adventurous and unpredictable aural journeys.

    Hello All.

My name is Yuri. I am Russian, born in Latvia, living in UK since 2005. I work as Web Application Developer. I've been listening to Psychedelic ambient and psychill since 2003-2004. I was 17 years old, and I was picking psilocybe semilanceata back at home and naturally started researching everything that is related with psychedelic culture, heard Future sounds of ambient vol3. And shortly after heard Shpongle. Became crazy Shpongle fan until they released 4th album. Was listening to Shpongle all day everyday and it was like a religion for me for a while, then suddenly my obsession stopped when 4th album was released.

These days I am mostly listening to Matt Hillier's music and sacred bass/glitch inspired psychill. I do listen to psytrance, nothing cheesy, nothing too progressive, sometimes dark and forest but not manically. I do listen to other genres as well including idm, balkan, dub techno, etc etc. Whatever sounds interesting can work.

I heard about psybient.org in it's early days naturally through social media, and my friend Nick Gabriel, then started following iurii on Facebook to get all the latest updates.

    Best.

Since using Bandcamp and self releasing the music income now pays for music gear....software, synths etc. So it has become self supporting which is nice.

It's a little bit easier these days to combine creativity with a normal job as music technology is that much more immediate. For a few hundred quid you can stuff a pc with a fully functioning studio in a few hours. Back in the Atari / sampler / synths days putting a studio together was expensive and time consuming. Now you can lob a loop from Ableton into a sequencer and it will time stretch itself instead of spending a good couple of hours lining up a loop in a sampler. My first sampler had 8 mono samples, 30 seconds of mono sampling time and cost me £500 second hand. Do we appreciate this? Probably not, it probably just pushes our expectations up.

In general there are very very few people making a living from music nowadays. Even Philip Glass worked as a taxi driver and plumber while he wrote music for 18 musicians. Then within that larger music industry you have to realise that psy chill is a very very small niche. I think part of Ott's success (aside from writing very good stuff) is the fact that dub music has a certain crossover element. Dub and reggae is very popular with a broad range of people beyond the psychill community. He can tour America and play with other dub or dubstep artists as well as the psychedelic festivals. Good formula that.

Life did throw up the opportunity a few years ago to work more solidly on music. So I took it. And I can say that immersing yourself in something is a very worthwhile thing to do in life, particularly if it's something that you are really interested in. I definitely took my productions up to another level. Through teaching myself and asking questions on forums and now I know my way around the gear I can easily write good sounding music around a normal job (but then again I don't have children). But in terms of sitting down all day every day to write music, my experience is that it does suck a little bit of the magic or of it. But it also has its own rewards.

But that sense of achievement can be achieved in plenty of areas of life. Doesn't have to be music. Plastering, being a waiter, understanding finance... There's a joy in life from applying yourself to something and seeing the rewards. For sure. It makes more sense to throw that type of energy into something that you know will allow you to live well and enjoy your life.. But well...music has a beautiful lure. It may not be the sane or economic choice in life but, well, when that groove finally slots together, you can't beat that feeling.

My advice to anyone starting out in creating music is to enjoy the creativity more than the production, and allow the production side to gradually build up as you finish tracks. You can write /arrange good tracks without decent production (you can!) but you can't write decent tracks that connect with people if you've spent 10 years obsessing over compressors and limiters.

I hardly ever thought about production for years. I just made music. But when I heard Ott Hallucinogen in Dub I started to look more at that side of things. Ott definitely raised the bar in psychill..and I thought my music was pants in comprison. I had crap monitoring, terrible eq habits and hardly knew how to use a compressor... But you know what? It turned that Ott was listening to my first album (Dryads Bubble) in his car for ten years. For me that was proof that electronic music is still about creativity and expression... and not production values.

Shulman is also one of my favourite artists. Really hope he/they make a comeback at some point. And also Aleph Zero, naturally. They did some really sweet music and sounded different than most other labels out there.

Yaniv has gone to Australia and is not making music for health reasons and has mostly left shahar to run aleph zero on his own, but it has unfortunately ground to a halt right now. I know this because I was signed to release with Aleph Zero during this time.   But due to their sheer inactivity I built up loads of material and just had to so something with it in the end, hence my dual album release of 2015.  I think lots of artists were in the same boat and had to look elsewhere for their releases.  bluetech / hibernation etc

It's a great pity because they are lovely guys and they did release very special music.  It's a pity for me too because a release on Aleph would have been a very decent profile raiser.

I really hope they don't mind me telling me people their situation but I think there are quite a few people in the chill out community who have wondered about this, borne out of love for the label.

Album all the way also. It feels more of a story rather than some random tracks together as few mentioned here. And also agree on overdoing it. Grouch suddenly released few big compilations of unreleased tracks, Kuba, Abakus, even ishq sometimes... although I still buy all of his music

But Spatialize, if you are saying it will take you 3 years to release next full length album.. in that case I would prefer you to do EPs as I would like to hear more of your music after last 2 releases!

ah no Yuri what I meant was, if I released everything I have right now as EP's and then started off for a new album from scratch, then it would take a good 2-3 years/.  As it stands I have a good half an album worth of material ready and also some nice tracks in development (so a few EP's is an option right now...but this thread has convinced me that it's probably best to hang on and wait to release an album).

But I'm not pushing it at all.  Just making music when the muse is there and enjoying it along the way.  Having said that I am toying with the idea of a techno EP as I've been writing a bit of upbeat recently and I'm not sure that they would fit into an album, might be too diverse.
