I recently heard some very convincing evidence Psybient originated from a small planet where mushrooms grow to the size of oak trees in the outer rim of the Antares galaxy.

This is probably the biggest reason some might say psychill is dead. I for one would prefer to see psybass go into its own direction and separate from psychill.

I was always jealous of my colleges having impressive amounts of layers. Now I don't care, if maximum sixteen sounds good, why should I force myself to have 32+?

With samples from movies and such I often don't worry too much about the noise, I remove some but there's not much you can do about it without becoming the equivalent of a heart surgeon. And it also depends where the sample sits, by that I mean the position of the song. There will be a difference between including on the beginning, in the middle of everything happening or in something like a more quite bridge section or middle8. But generally I roll of the lows, since it's usually just useless rumble down there, remove some hissing highs but not too much to make it sound very dull (unless it's what I'm going for). Sometimes it helps to use a de-esser but Iacchus already said what the problem is then.

If the noise is really invasive I just search for a better one.

But it's always very individual and EQing and Mixing is always a big boogeyman for novice producers. So lot's of experience, producing and learning is always the best technique    . (that's why I'm here sucking up the precious knowledge from other more seasoned producers, muhaha)

One thing I have learned is to cut the sound rather than boosting. Since boosting only adds db to the mix.

Whether it sounds better is up for debate...but it certainly brings the listener a sense of operation, involvement and connection that doesn't come from clicking a virtual play button.

you are going to buy full track, but it is divided in four stem files (for example: drums, ambient, vocal, leads). you can download free program to create this kind of files here: http://www.stems-music.com/stem-creator-tool/

I did it once with my track, just to try (it's created by NI and compatible with Traktor), it's real fun, but unfortunately there is no psychill tracks created in this format

but I think it give huge posibilities in remixing! wish to have psychill tracks in this format to play sets. I think Rinkadink play his own track in this format with two D2 traktor controllers.

I spend a lot of time improvising on my synth. Most of the time, It's a chord progression that drives me into a a song clip.
Then, it's song building around this part. It can modify this to fit in a music genre I want to develop

With psybient tracks I first try to find the right atmosphere I'm looking for with pad and/or some keys together with delay and reverb I want to use. There it starts...

If I'll start creating a downtempo or psytrance track I usually try to create the kick and bass -loop first and some percussions and hi-hats to find the right drive and mood for the track.

I've noticed that it's easier to start a new track and find the right elements faster is when you first listen to some of your favourite music

At what point do you guys start using a reference track (if you tend to use one!)?

4 votes for Pablo Selecta by 4 people who only voted for that release and nothing else? Looking kinda suspicious there Pablo.

Next month I'm going to enable the option to let you see who voted for what, if I see a bunch of brand new accounts voting for the same release and nothing else, foul play is suspected and all votes will be deleted and all those accounts will be banned. Fake votes will absolutely not be tolerated.

Edit: turns out its just friends of Pablo coming here to vote after seeing a facebook post of his highlighting this poll. Still, I would encourage those newcomers to check out some of the other releases here too though.
but the above point still stands. (maybe I should clarify that if it looks like multiple accounts are from the same IP address, those are what will be considered "fake".)

Definitely, Johnny! I'm super into the approach used by people like Taylor Deupree.

My plan, though it's progressing waaaay slower than I first thought, is to make a rack centered around the Phonogene or some equivalent module. Tape recorder madness! I've got PCB's and panels to make most of the Mutable modules and rails for a DIY case. I just need time and peace of mind to actually DO all of it. I've access to all facillities including laser cutting for the case at my university, but the studies are taking up all my time and energy.... soo, maybe after the summer holidays I'll get some soldering done.

anybody interested in modular ambient/downtempo? personally I am more and more and more into... in the nearest future I am going to build my own rack case and after that I will begin to collect modules. first I think to get Mutable Instruments Clouds and some lfo's for modulation, I will use it as an granural effect for the rest of my stuff and after that I will get some oscillators, envelopes, vca and others
