    Thanks guys, this is all really useful. I think workflow of the synth is a big one for me. I'm really looking to infuse more playfulness into my workflow, & get away from the 'mouse clickliness' that can saturate my process at times. I want to stop programming sound so much, & start playing more. I already have a midi keyboard so this isn't required. The Nord Rack 3 looks & sounds really interesting but is kinda pricey for a starter synth. I think this is the kind thing I'm looking towards. Something where I can have a lot of fun & make some really interesting unique sounds. Just gotta finish my current project first & then it'll be time for the upgrade

    Great topic idea I used to struggle with this quite a bit, as starting a track can be so vast, its like where do you start? I think it can almost be a little daunting for those of us not from a traditional musical background! So now I start with an idea, or an intention for the tracks...then I start collecting / auditioning / carving sounds that resonate with that idea, intention, or the feeling behind it, but without worrying about how they go together yet. That comes later. It could be anything pads / atmospherics / synths / drums / whatever so long as it aligns with my root idea / feeling. Then, when the time comes to play, I already have a collections of sounds & idea's that more or less match the vibe I'm looking for - this makes play time, much more playful! And productive, because I'm not spending my time looking for components. Sure some sounds get ditched, & new ones created along the way, but it just gets me moving so much quicker. Now if only I could find such an efficient way to finish tracks, lol!

    For samples, like everyone says, make sure they are as clean as possible to begin with. Then, I then run mine through a plugin by iZotope called 'Dialogue Denoiser', which really cleans it up. You'll be surprised how clean a sample can get, just be careful not to remove any nice bits from the voice. I then EQ as required, & add delay / fx / compression if appropriate. These days I try and use samples more sparingly, as I find it alters the vibe of a track soooo much...so I really dont want to do it for the sake of it! Less is more for me

    You should check out Ektoplazm for sure, i'd be very surprised if there wasn't someone making these kind of sounds there. If not, just get stuck in & carve the sounds you want to hear! I think, generally speaking, people just lean towards the sounds they resonate with most at that time.... sometimes this is flowery organic sounds & sometimes this is more robotic sci-fi-esque, it all depends what vibe you're going for. Some of the recent Miktek / Scann-Tec stuff has a very 'techincal' feel you might like...super detailed technical atmospheric spaces, really immersive, is good stuff! Some of the Easily Embarrassed has a slightly trippy robotic vibe too occasionally. Happy hunting!

    Bandcamp all the way for me, with a little bit of Ektoplazm mixed in. Love everything about these distribution options, their ethics, direct contact with artists, high quality options. Occasionally I'll struggle to find a track so I might have to look at beatport or juno, but this is getting rarer & rarer. I'm reluctant to buy cd's these days due to their fragility - no matter how careful I am sooner or later they end up unplayable...plus its a lot of weight to carry about when it could all fit on a HDD.

    Some great advice here & excellent food for thought One thing that hasn't been been mentioned, I find doing my EQ'ing in short bursts, usually no more than 4/5 channels at a time max, is pretty effective. This way I'm usually working with 'clean ears' when cleaning my sounds. EQ'ing with tired ears usually ends up with me EQ'ing again.

    I also have to recommend Apple MacBookPro for the reliability factor as well. Just turn on, boot Logic & crack on without having to worry about updates, driver issues & other Windows related faff. They are more pricey, but they can go for years & years. Look into refurbished options, as this can save a huge amount money. However be aware that buying refurbished introduces a small risk, so research your refurbisher thoroughly first. I did it, still fine 2 years later. Also SSD is going to make the price jump a lot (but fully worth it from what I've been told)
