With psybient tracks I first try to find the right atmosphere I'm looking for with pad and/or some keys together with delay and reverb I want to use. There it starts...
 
If I'll start creating a downtempo or psytrance track I usually try to create the kick and bass -loop first and some percussions and hi-hats to find the right drive and mood for the track.
 
I've noticed that it's easier to start a new track and find the right elements faster is when you first listen to some of your favourite music
 
At what point do you guys start using a reference track (if you tend to use one!)?

Easy way is to use reversed cymbal with some FX to bring stereo width and depth.
Sometimes those work quite well, specially when added some reverb and delay to create that after swoosh
I like to automate a stereo width plugin with reversed cymbals to "open it up" a bit. Also panning the transition can bring some extra depth.

Pretty chilled and deep

It is a really good documentary and sends quite strong message what happens if we don't take this seriously. Highly recommended to watch this

Well the flashy ones tend to be for mixdowns is what i meant! Ie saturation plugs / analogue modelling / tube kinda stuff (eg Magnetic 2, Twin Tube), precise and versatile eqs (eg FabFilter ProQ), transient shapers (SPL Transient Designer), width processors (Izotope Imager)... this is all mixdown stuff, I wouldn't use them in sound design, just in sculpting the track to fit together nicely and have a bit of shine
 
In terms of writing the actual track, I'm mostly working with a synth, layering drum samples with some simple filtering, chopping up audio, timestretching, automating simple delay effects, and so on... I can do all this without a flashy VSTs, except perhaps a really good synth if im not using hardware

From free VST's my favorite is TAL Noisemaker. Great little synth There was also free (2 osc) version of U-He's Bazille called Beatzille that is also quite handy little modular style thing.
 
My personal favorites are U-He Diva and Lennar Digital Sylenth1. Diva for deep bass, pads and other atmospheres and Sylenth1 for fx, leads, 4/4 bass etc...

Revisiting Alwoods' Album:

Levels are definitely too low. Going to fix that after I've got speakers.
 
I'm getting a new computer at the end of the year, so hopefully there is lot more stuff coming out in the next year.
