like any creative process, when the creative impulse is not there, that is the time to learn new stuff about your craft so that when you're back in the creative zone you're not spending that time working out how to use a new compressor or synth etc...

I've read the manual of every bit of hardware i ever bought from cover to cover. sometimes before ever turning it on. :-)

if it is true then we need to start a campaign to make the universe resonante at a different frequency to save us the hassle of detuning all our sounds.

in ableton i use the track delay to calibrate it with the mix at 50% or so, so i can hear the transients, then i turn up to 100% wet for the record.  Hadnt thought of a way in Bitwig, which Im using now, I shall try your suggestion

Quite a lot of these outboard synths are relatively new and haven;t been used much on my recordings so far.  The laptop is new too and has a few new software additions too.

Synths run into the desk and I use the mute function on the Mackie Mixer that also sends the otuput to an Alternative output which runs into the audio interface.  I just unassign the audio output on audio track when recording.
I think I've just about got the right balance between software and hardware now.  Definitely a bit more fun with a bit of hardware to tinkle on.

Ah yeah Dimensions.  That groove is kinda upbeat electronica / IDM. I like a nice open clear groove that people can put themselves into, and then float on the atmopsheres.

So much modern electronic music is so rythmically cluttered with glitch after glitch and then mastered so loud that the music is kind of forcing it's way out of the speakers and slapping you round the face.. Everyone tries to compete with everyone else to make the loudest, most complex music, leaving little chance for the listener to meet the music half way.

I think that is the point I was trying to make in a couple of other posts on the subject.  Opinions.  About the music.

To say an artist has sold out, or is burnt out, or not trying, whathaveyou, seems to me to be playing the person and not the ball (i.e. the music itself).   Our tastes change over time, as do we, and so does an artist's.  Sometimes their music stays too much the same for us, and other times the music is not the same enough and we don't like the direction they are going in.  But it's all really relative to our own direction we find ourselves headed in.  It's not good or bad.  Maybe it can be disappointing - kiss the winged joy and all that - but other times it's pleasing to go along with them.

reverb rarely gets used on kick and bass, although sometimes if it works it works.

reverb is usually used on an aux channel as sharing reverbs helps to conserve cpu cycles but it also helps to place the track into one space.  this replicates how reverb would work in a live setting as musicians are playing in one room.  gives cohesiveness.  don't forget to set your reverb on the aux channel to 100% wet.

On drums i will often use a drum plate reverb.  The effect of this is something like a gated drum sound but with a little extra openess.  If you have Logic DAW check out the "big drums" setting which has a perfect impluse for drums in my opnion.  Sometimes you can use these on whole loops.  I would try not to use cathedral or large spaces reverbs on the drums too much (although in small amounts it does work) except for one off massive reverbs on one off drum sounds, as is said above.  I find that spring reverbs are better for giving lots of reverb to drums without taking up too much headroom in the mix.  Very useful effect for downtempo music.

to give an example... one of my snare sounds may send off to a couple of reverb aux channels. it have a little bit of "big drum" reverb just to give it some body and a little bit of spring reverb to give it space.  same process with a percussion loop.

I often apply larger reverbs such as hall, church, cathedral onto pads and atmospheres. actually this is where valhalla comes in very nicely as it doesn;t thicken the mix too much.

so i often have about 3 reverbs going per track plus a couple of delays.

for rythmic synth parts i would go for delays first to add space to the sound as they take up less space in the mix.  Hall plates, spring reverbs or very small amounts of larger reverbs can be used in varying amounts.

if it's a busy track sometimes you might want to put an eq after the reverb and filter out some lower frequencies, but just be careful that you don;t loose the body of the track in more ambient moments.  you can always automate the eq so that you can experience the full frequency range during intros/breakdowns etc..

i think the important thing with reverb though is not to overdo it.  too much reverb and your track will sound lifeless and dull...and small with no headroom as reverb just eats up your mix. if you feel that you've overdone the reverb on the track you can always just try turning the volume of the aux channel down.

but try delays aswell to add body to the mix.

lastly, for massive space pad reverbs and deep ambience, set the track channel fx bus send to "pre send", take the volume of the channel right down and then when you adjust the fx send you would get a super wet ambient sound.  the only issue with this approach is that it can create massive reverb eq spikes so, either give the track volume a little increase to add a little body and / or insert an eq after the reverb and use a spectrum analyser to see where the sound is bunching up and cut it, often very strongly, there.

I live in a valley 2 miles from the North Coast of Cornwall in the UK.  Cornwall is in the South West corner of UK, about 5 hours from london on the train.

Cornwall is a pretty area and is beautiful in the summer.  Beaches, cliffs and moorland but it's a bit over popular with tourists in the summer.  Not much going on down here in terms of music though and i'm getting itchy feet again and really fancy checking out and hopefully playing at a few european psychill festivals next year now that I've got a funky live set again.

I've lived in Birmigham, Sheffield, Devon, Somerset so far. Devon my favourite so far.

I use the Ultrareverb from Eventide, mostly I mix as you would on a small analogue board, so 1 main reverb on an Aux return.

Sometimes I'll add a second HUGE and long 'verb on another aux, often with delay doing weird things before or after it, gives Eno style massive ambience and effects etc.

I tend not to do much more than that and keep it simple. Sometimes snares and claps get their own reverb added to the channel, but that's mainly to make them 'thicker' not to make them sound like they are in big spaces.

I would like to see a more active forum really but I don't know how or if this achieveable because most people are hooked into facebook.

On the psymusic.co.uk forum there is a media production section that manages to keep going through a hardcore of interested folk.

Perhaps a Psybient members compilation bandcamp release?  Maybe of unreleased or new producers?
