macOS versions

Recommended Posts

Mavericks 10.9.5 / 2014 MBP / 2.7gHz / 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD

I'm always afraid of upgrading more because of Logic.  Apple often updates OS without nearly enough testing for apps like Logic, which then may not work properly after update.

Haven't thought about the security updates stuff... or even speed.  But Mavericks runs fine and allocates RAM really well, so I like it.

A few years ago I updated to Mavericks on another computer, and now Logic 9 is ridiculously buggy, which means a lot of old projects with 32-bit plugins are basically lost  I learned my lesson: never update unless I have a good reason, and never in the first month after new OS release.

My personal workstation is a Hackintosh running High Sierra (plus Win 10 for gaming). That's assumedly the last macOS compatible with my old Focusrite Saffire, so I don't really want to upgrade. (At work, I use a Macbook with a fully up-to-date macOS, as they are a few software which depends on that.)

The recommended operating system version depends on your hard and software.

You need to know for which macOS versions drivers for your audio- and midi interfaces are currently supplied and also if the creators of your software have confirmed that the latest updates are usable. For example, Native Instruments warns very often about updating macOS because the software requires updates which need to be created and tested.

On the other side, drivers and applications require a minimum version to be usable.
