Importance of backup's

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to remind how important it's to have backup's of your music collection and productions... Had most of my music collection on WD MyPassport Ultra (500GB) which died. Luckily I had some of the collection also saved on another drive but still lost some music I can't get back...

Today I got myself a new backup disk to backup music collection and production stuff. Got a Transcend StoreJet (1TB), never again WD...

What are your habits with backup's?

That's rough!

I have a 1 TB WD Passport portable drive that my main music collection is on.  That is backed up in real time to NAS drive in my house, and the NAS drive is backed up every 1-3 months to another external drive (Seagate 3 TB) that I keep in a locked drawer where I work (so, offsite).

I only realised recently that the NAS drive backs up all of the music files - importantly - but does not back up the *.asd files that Ableton creates when you load a track as a clip in Ableton, warp it and save the clip settings.  Don't know why as there appears to be no lower size cut-off.  Anyhoo....

So if I lose my WD, I will not lose everything, but I will lose the *.asd files.  It's not the end of the world (*touches wood*) as most of the clip settings are saved in another folder that I use to navigate Ableton to find tracks to play.

I have had my WD for about 5 years now (*touches wood again, and rubs it*), same as my Asus laptop.

Interested to hear from other people too.

i feel your pain, i lost a HDD some years ago and now i have a backup plan:

i have my main files + main music collection on MBP 2011 (512 gb ssd + 2 tb hdd placed instead of optical drive) :

each time i go out to play a gig i make a backup on 3tb hdd (i think it is WD) - this always stays home

i have also another 2 + 1tb hdd's that are in another physical location (offsite) - i sync it every 2-3 monthes

to sync files between all these HDDs i use software called "chronosync" (mac only as i know).

it shows how many files have been modified befire i press "sync".

i also have a "online" file hosting with 1 tb of data and i copy important files there. via "rsync" command line tool.

p.s.

keeping all in sync is time consuming, however i think i my data is relatively save.

That sounds like a pretty good back-up arrangement Gagarin.

Thankfully, software on my NAS drive handles the sync between PC and the NAS, and then the back-up from the NAS to my 3TB HDD.  So all I have to do is take my 3TB HDD home, plug it in, and press 'back-up'.

I also back-up movies, TV shows, and perhaps most important of all, family photos.

Update: On Tuesday night, after this post, I had another look at my back-up arrangements. By default, I had my NAS drive set to not back-up temporary files.  However, Ableton's *.asd files share the same extension as temporary MS Word documents, so that is why they weren't backing up.  I turned on the back-up for temp files and they all backed up within 15 minutes.

Win!

How about cloud services, does anyone back-up their files regularly to internet? At least Google Drive has 15GB free space to upload for free and Microsoft OneDrive has 5GB for free...

There's also dropbox that offers space for free and I'll bet that a lot of others too....

Hey all,

Just joined.

I'm a wannabe producer...more accurately a dabbler. But here to learn and I love the genre as a listener.

I use this PC for business as well as music and it would be a disaster to lose the data, it's my life's work.

Here is my backup strategy:

It is based on a propriety  backup program called Macrium Reflect. (There is a free version) Reflect can do scheduled incremental backups which means that the entire 400 Gbytes of data on my HDD do not have to be copied over when I do a backup. Only changes since the most recent backup are copied each day. These scheduled backups are performed with no intervention required from me and usually take just a few minutes. Also, the incremental method means that I have a day by day record of changes for the previous month and can roll the entire system back to a previous state using image restore. Alternatively, the program allows file/folder restores to any previous backup increment.

Each month I rotate my external USB backup media and consolidate the 30 or so daily increments from the month into a new full backup and then start over with the increments. Since this can take a few hours I let it run overnight. Currently, I have 2 backup drives but the procedure would work with any number. I store one of the backup drives offsite just in case of a disaster such as flood/fire/theft.

It sounds complex but it mostly runs itself apart from the monthly USB external drive swap which takes a few seconds.

Hope this helps someone.
