Planet Dog

Recommended Posts

Any Planet Dog Records fans among us? I certainly am. They put out some top quality releases in their time IMO - and that was very early on. In the early 90s they released some proro-psybient tunes and albums/EPs before any other label. They were years ahead of their time. Personal faves are:

Artist releases:

Eat Static - Abduction, Lost in Time EP and especially Implant, as well as their best-of singles compilation Revisitation

Children of The Bong - Sirius Sounds

Banco de Gaia - Maya, Last Train to Lhasa EP and Live at Glastonbury

Timeshard - Crystal Oscillations and Zero (Ouroboros) EP

Compilations:

Feed Your Head vols 1-3

Quadruped

Beyond Planet Dub

and especially

Voyage to Planet Dog

and

Peel Your Head:The Peel Sessions

which are in fact the two releases that got me into psychedelic downtempo in the first place. They are now defunct as far as new releases are concerned but they still sell some of their stuff on their website.

Not so much Maya, but LTtL a bit more. I liked the Very Extended Ambient Version and the AstroPilot Remix of the title track quite a lot. The problem with Banco de Gaia is that there are so many remixes of his tunes that I tend to lose track. Tripswitch made a superb remix of Acquiescence on the Apollo Remixed album too.

Generally speaking I prefer Maya over LTtL, but the title track of the latter is my fave Banco de Gaia track. I like some of his later albums a quite a bit too, like Big Men Cry, Farewell Ferengistan and Apollo. Did you ever go to a Megadog event Jatab? I wish I had but I found out about them too late.

Yeah, some of these  remixes are really good ( this one as well).   Unfortunately I`ve never been on Megadog event as I live in London since not so long time and did not hear about it, too before but could read it`s back but in Manchester, this time.

I`ve just seen this message from Banco de Gaia on his facebook profile

"

My good friend dr trippy remixed 'Kuos' as part of the 'Last Train to Lhasa' 20th Anniversary programme. As it didn't make it on to the release, we have decided to give it away for FREE instead Emotikon smile

Please share this link far and wide  "

So, I do ......

There are a few best-of live digital releases by Nodens Ictus, they were pretty awesome. I saw them a few times in the 00s, they were mind blowing, though a different beast to that of the recordings, much more technoy. I reckon Spacelines would appeal to some people on the forum.

Children of The Bong - Sirius Sounds [is] timeless :)

I don't know if you're aware of their two tape releases:

http://www.discogs.com/Children-Of-The-Bong-Untitled/release/408169

http://www.discogs.com/Children-Of-The-Bong-Untitled/release/6563391

Since they are impossible to find from an original source and the prices for the one which is available on discogs are rather steep, you might want to have a look at these links:

Yes, I know them - even have had some of these tracks somewhere in digital ( mp3) format  which once found in the net ;)

Thanks for links - good to have it back :)

Feed Your Head Volume 2 was what got me going with production

the moment i heard the beat and bass drop on Qurna by banco de gaia i knew what music i wanted to make

That tune is actually on the first of the series. The second one is my favourite, but not by far. The fourth one is the one I can't connect with, but that was not on Planet Dog anyway.

Also, somehow I like Beyond Planet Dub more than Planet Dub too, despite it having fewer familiar artists. Top quality dub, with lots of ambient and some reggae elements too, like some brass instruments and some singing here and there.
